A good pillow is essential for a restful night’s sleep. Without a pillow, the neck and head are unsupported which can lead to both short and long-term muscle strain. A pillow that’s overly soft may provide insufficient support, whereas one that is too hard will be uncomfortable.

Finally, even if the pillow is quite comfortable, the kind of fill can become a repository for allergy-inducing irritants. These irritants lead to red, itchy eyes and congested passageways that take away from our sleep.

The reason down fill can cause allergies is partly due to dust mites, a microscopic household creature not even visible to the naked eye. Dust mites take up residence in the natural clusters of down fiber. The dust mites produce an allergen which is incorrectly recognized by the immune system of some people as an infectious invader. The body starts off an immune response which leads to allergy attacks.

Many people suffering from down allergies will turn toward down alternatives for their pillows. Such pillows may be effective at reducing allergies depending on the exact kinds of sensitivities. There are three major kinds of down alternatives. The first type is constructed of natural material, in most cases silk. The second type is polyester-derived fibers that mimic down. The third is high tech foam which contours to the body but retains its original shape.

The down alternatives that come from natural sources such as silk are prized by many people. Silk especially is a very light but heat-preserving material that is widely used and sought after in Japan and China. The only problem for consumers here in the U.S. is that silk can be somewhat expensive.

Gel fiber synthetic pillows are likely to be the second most used fill after down. Recent improvements in the technology of polyester fibers means that they can be made almost like down, i.e. very warm but also very light and fluffy. In fact, ski clothes and sleeping bags are often stuffed with gel fiber synthetics. The consumer should be aware that the polyester fills which are best are also the most expensive. The most expensive being usually manufactured by a specialist company and licensed to various secondary industries.

Pillows are generally two component objects made of fabric and fill. A modern type of pillow is a single component object shaped from a single piece of dense memory foam. Memory foam was invented by NASA Ames for seating material in flight craft. In recent years, it has become cheap enough to incorporate into household bedding. Its comfort lies in its property of conforming to the curves of your head and neck. However, pillows made from memory foam have been reported to emit a unsettling chemical odor.

Imagine life without color: you wouldn’t know night from day, stop from go, dead from alive. These and much more are the significance and relevance of color in our lives. In the same way, people react to colors. They are moved by it, and respond to it according to what emotions a particular color may evoke in the seer.

Color gives a room personality. It give furniture life and creates an atmosphere and character that you may desire to have for a particular area of your home. Color creates visual illusion. Color can create the illusion of having more space than reality allows. Brighter space. Cozier space. Narrower space. etc etc.

A good designer or housewife know their colors when it comes to decorating and home furnishing. If either would like to improve their home, they mustn’t be afraid of using a bit of color. They must understand that in decorating a room or picking out other items of home decor, color is extremely significant.

But, there are some basic principles that must be remembered with working with colors. When you are working with colors in home decorating, there are two basic types–warm and cool colors or tones.

What are the warm colors and cool colors and how do furniture in their tones affect the entire look of the room? Warm colors are based on yellows and yellowish colors, oranges, browns, greens that include veridian green and olive greens, burgundy red, red orange tones, dark browns, reddish copper and such colors. On the other hand, cool colors are based on blue, pink, purples, and light yellows, turquoise, cyan, light greens and such colors. Warm and cool tones or colors create different moods in a room. Warm tones create a severe, and heavy look. Warm colors also make the room smaller. However, designers love to use this color especially in decorating and selecting furniture for a library, a study, or a home office, and rooms of houses in areas with winter season because it creates a cozy atmosphere and usually compliments the warm color glow of fireplaces and hearths. They create an atmosphere conducive to thinking.

Cool colors or cool tones, on the other hand, are best to use in decorating rooms for the young. Cool colors create a light, breezy atmosphere. These colors also make the room seem a bit larger than it is and less severe. Light-hearted and carefree. These cool colors are good conductors or light.

I assume that you buy an area rug because you have every intention of using it. You already know where to put it and what it is for. It may be for decorative reasons or for practical purposes.

Deciding on an area rug to use is about the room or space. You sure won’t be wearing it, so it’s a definite fact that it will be for a place in your house. However, simply picking out a rug doesn’t not only concern the room but also includes the personal choice of the person who is deciding. Let’s start with the focal point usefulness of a rug.

When we speak of focal point, this is the decor that attracts attention at first glance. This is the diva of the room decorations. To be an effective focal point, the area rug must have a striking quality, something that will stand out among the crowd of other furnishings.

Second, area rugs can be accessories. They may not be the center of attention but they play a major part in making the central piece the star. Rugs are mostly in neutral colors and in more delicate designs.

The last one is for practical reasons. These are the most helpful, generous, kind-hearted of all rugs. A rug used for this purpose is placed in areas where it is most needed. For example, to cover a spot, disguise a stain or unpleasant tint, or to make a dark room look brighter.

Is that all there is to it? No, not quite. In addition to the uses of the various rugs, one question that is often asked is “What size does it need to be?”

A rug’s size will depend both on the space and its role. Take for instance a rug on the foyer. It can be a focal point if garbed in colorful hues. Who could miss a happy-looking floor greeting you on your way inside the house? As an accessory, the rug should be subtle or perhaps smaller in size. For help reasons, which I guess is the main point why the rug is on the foyer in the first place, take more consideration on the actual space you’re planning to put the rug on. Gauge if there’s a need for an exact size or some more adjustments.

What if you’re thinking about having two rugs in the same room? Go right on ahead, honey. Having multiple rugs is not a problem, as long as you consider the sizes. A reminder: use area rugs with different sizes, because same-sized ones can make the room look divided, like you have territorial issues or something. While different sizes can actually create some balance. The yin and the yang.

Don’t be ripped off by imitations. Be sure to buy authentic transitional rugs directly.
