The interior design of any residential or office space must take care of several critical aspects. The following fundamental principles, if adhered to, will take care of a number of these factors. All of them play a significant role in the appeal of a space, though they may be used in different ways in various situations. |

Unity: This concerns the idea that the entire home or any other structure is to be seen as a single unit, partitioned or divided only by walls and staircases, and that there should exist some amount of intrinsic consistency in the design of the unit as an overall entity. It will be prudent to remember the overall scheme of things.
Balance: This concerns the distribution of the visual weight in an area. It is crucial to position things with comparable visual appeal at carefully selected positions to attain that perfect balance from a particular point. Balance can be of three types. The most basic type is symmetrical balance, which is very straightforward to attain. The second is asymmetrical, which requires a lot of imagination, but is increasingly popular. A radial balance is the third type, which is accomplished by defining a small core and placing things around that.
Proportion: This deals with sizes of different objects in relation to one another. It is critical that various articles are in sync with each other and with the space in terms of proportions. Lack of proportion will result in imbalance that will adversely affect the look of the room, as some items will be over emphasized while others will not get enough visibility.
Focus: A focus in interior design of a space is important for its attractiveness. What kind of focal item you select is up to you. It could be something like a nice painting or a furniture item. This item should make an impression on the viewer and also be relevant to the design of the rest of the room. It must stand out, but not look out of the scheme of things.
Rhythm: Having a rhythm too is very essential for achieving a good design. The design must seem to flow as per a pattern from one point to another. Arches, ornate designs on walls and floors, carefully chosen paintings, repetition of colours and designs etc will help you achieve a rhythm.
If sufficient attention is paid to these aspects, you can be certain that the interior designing exercise will be successful. It is always a good idea to take assistance from an interior design specialist to take care of these factors and all the nuances.
