Probably the most popular type of bedding that is sold in the market is the innerspring mattress. It has been used for generations and is available in different models and styles to suit every need. Innerspring mattresses somehow look fairly the same when you look from the outside, but if you take a much closer in the inside, you will notice they have a lot of differences.
What is an innerspring mattress?
An innerspring mattress has wire coils inside which are the support structure. It has a sturdy border wire fastened to the coils’ perimeter and at the same time supports the coils which help maintain the shape and lessen sagging. The border is also strengthened with foam or springs that are specially shaped to support the entire sleep surface up to the edge and stop ‘rollout’ as well as edge breakdown. An insulator, which is made of a strong padding or layer, separates the upholstery from the innerspring support system to prevent it from dropping into the coils.
Parts of an innerspring mattress:
The innerspring mattress has three parts, the foundation, the spring core and the upholstery layers. The foundation of the innerspring mattress is of three different kinds, box spring, the traditional wood, and grid. The box spring is a needed enhancement to the inner spring mattress for suitable support and comfort, which lift the sleeping surface up the floor. Persons who have ailments find it easier to get out of bed with this enhancement. A traditional wood foundation is commonly made of softwood which typically has seven or eight support slats that are covered with paperboard. This foundation stabilizes and strengthens the sleeping surface of the mattress. The other foundation that is the grid is made of steel and wood combination.
The spring cores of the mattress also called inner springs are made of solid steel coils or springs that support the whole sleeping surface. The gauge of the coils is one of the factors that determine the support and strength of the innerspring mattress. The measurement of the coils is basically in quarter increments. The fewer the number of the coils, the thicker the spring is.
The upholstery layer provides cover to the mattresses as well as comfort and cushion. It is made up of three parts, the insulator, which separates the core of the mattress from the middle upholstery, middle upholstery that consists of all the materials between the insulator and quilt, and the quilt, which is the upper layer of the mattress.
