Making your own candles is a fun activity for people of all ages. It is not difficult or expensive to carry out, and most of us should have the required equipment in our own kitchens. Also you have the added bonus of knowing that there are no toxic scents or dyes that are in them; you can choose which fragrances and colors to add. They make the perfect gift and you can create them in various interesting shapes and sizes.
There are a few different forms of wax that can be used to make candles today, you do not have to use paraffin gel. Many people dislike paraffin based candles as they give off a lot of soot and burn down quickly. Also, other types of wax produce lesser amounts of melted deposits and what is created can easily be removed from all kinds of surfaces.
Before you start the candle making process you should check that you have all the necessary equipment. A vessel will be required to melt the raw wax. Many people choose to use a double boiler. This is a vessel that looks like a large pot with a smaller one contained inside. The outer pot will contain water for boiling and the smaller pot is where the wax is placed for melting.
The other pieces of equipment that are required include a ladle, thermometer, and a spoon. It is also best to have a measuring cylinder at hand to check the volume of melted wax that will be created. The type of raw wax that you purchase is up to you. Most forms can easily be purchased from your local craft shop or through the internet.
Of course a candle cannot burn without a wick. Most are made from braided cotton.
Some people choose to add fragrances and colors to their homemade candles. You need to make sure that these are to be used with candles as other forms can easily catch fire or even explode.
